Wild by Nature
24" x 36" Giclée
This painting was deeply inspired by what I describe as the 'flying horses' created by artists George Catlin and Alfred Miller. Their depictions of horse and riders became the ultimate romanticized icons of the vast unexplored American west. These fine steeds seemed to always be seen stretched out in a full run without even one hoof touching the ground. They fairly floated over the frontier landscapes like a carousel horse freed from its stationary pole. In turn they carried their heroic riders into grand adventures and great exploits, propelling them ultimately into a place in our history books.
Although this painting is a complex series of imagery and ideas, at it's core rides a powerful American Indian flaunting his prowess for everyone to witness. He and his mount are the very definition of self confidence and sufficiency. A wild, defiant spear wielding statement of fierce independence on full display. The title is found written on the paper cutout below the horse, 'Wild By Nature' which is found in Romans 11:24. It's left to the viewer to draw any conclusions or parallels.
